The fact that pastoralism and conflict are two things that could never be separated, Karamoja was once an area embattled in conflict over natural resources like pasture, livestock and water for survival of their animals. It was such a tough time that traveling to Karamoja was never advised for safety purposes. However, gone are the days when the region was known for conflict. The people of Karamoja are now building themselves up through cultural tourism through offering open doors to visitors to come experience the uniqueness of their lives. Every visitor who visits contributes tremendously to the well-being of the communities and helping them to achieve a better life..

Day 4. Cultural day experience with nature walk

An ancient volcano rises out of the semi-arid plains of Karamoja forming the highest mountain in the region with numerous peaks offering days of adventure. Wake up to an amazing nature walk in the land of Karamoja where people never used to have such luxury of experiencing the beauty of their own region because of wars.  The mountains of Karamoja are an exciting alternative to the more strenuous climbs in East Africa with many of the same attractions, a milder climate, lower elevation and requires no special equipment or technical experience. The expeditions are a mix of rich encounters with Uganda's highland people, breathtaking views and unique sights along the trails and unique campsites where you can enjoy the sunset, the stars and sunrise over the planes of Karamoja.

After the nature walk, break off for lunch before joining the locals for a village experience

This is not a sightseeing tour, but a participatory experience with the option to stay a night in a traditional hut in the village. A Manyatta is a traditional homestead where the Karimojong still life like their ancestors and conduct cultural traditions that have been passed on for many generations. We introduce you into the culture by taking you to the beating heart of the community and invite you to participate in daily life activities. From preparing local foods to celebrations, this will be an unforgettable journey.

The proud Karamojong people in Uganda’s northeastern corner live for their cattle and women. Many decades of conflict made Karamoja unthinkable as a travel destination.
