Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located 176 km from Kampala in Nakasongola district on Gulu Highway and its en route Murchison Falls National Park. The Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting endangered southern white Rhinos providing them a home in the wild.
Birding: The sanctuary is estimated to have a population of over 350 bird species which can be seen either during your half or full day birding expedition. Some of the birds that can be seen include the famous Shoebill stork, Giant Kingfisher, White Crested Turaco, and many more.

Rhino Trekking Tips
- Do not use flash photography during the trekking as it scares away the Rhinos

Day 1: Transfer to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting endangered Rhinos by giving them home just like in the wild and currently the sanctuary has 22 southern white Rhinos.
The journey to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary runs through community markets and homes where clients will experience a typical local market. We shall have an opportunity to stop at one of the local markets to purchase some fruits. Uganda is known for growing some of the sweetest fruits in the world.
Once at the sanctuary, clients will receive a briefing from a trained ranger about the rules to be followed while trekking Rhinos. Enter the territory of the Rhinos with a well-trained ranger who will guide you through the paths in the bush to where the Rhinos are. The Rhinos are allowed to freely move in their habitant and sometimes based on where they are located, you may have to drive for a distance before you get off the car. Approaching the White Rhinos on foot poses no danger if at all you follow all the instructions as given.
During the trekking, the sanctuary ranger will be giving you information about the behavior of the Rhinos at the sanctuary while at the same time you will have a wonderful photo moment in the wild with the Rhinos. The Rhino tracking takes roughly 1 – 2 hours or less based on the location of the Rhinos and clients are advised to have long pants, closed shoes, water, and insect repellent.
After the Rhino tracking, clients will head to Kabalenga Diners for lunch in case they are having no optional activities before transfer back to Entebbe / Kampala.
